Position Title: Educator - Applied Sciences Lead
Department: Education
Job Classification: Full time

Summary of Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions: Educator works to provide supplemental science education consistent with the Museum’s mission statement in the schools during the regular school day and at the museum during museum hours. Educator also serves as the primary resource for development of innovative Applied Sciences curricula (encompassing Engineering, Computer Science and Physics) and seeks to maintain a consistent approach to teaching Applied Sciences across all grade levels for MNS. Educator will also serve as coordinator for either: school trips, outreach programs, or after school programs.

Operational Impact: Helps to achieve the Museum’s mission by conducting educational programs off-site and in the museum and by developing innovative, experiential curriculum to supplement the curricular requirements of local schools.

Reports to the Director of Education

Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions:

  • Serve as the primary oversight for all Applied Sciences curricula, as determined by Educator and the Director of Education. Responsible for purchasing and maintaining all material supplies utilized by Applied Sciences courses, and managing budget for those programs as determined by the Director of Education.
  • Maintain a budget for either in-house, outreach, or after school programs. Budget numbers are generated in collaboration with the Director of Education and the Chief Financial Officer. Educator must prepare a monthly report including all budget revenue and expenditures (excluding payroll) and provide this to the Director of Education by the end of each month for inclusion in a month-end summary to be created by the Director. Educator will also assist Marketing in developing public materials for these programs.
  • Research and develop curriculum in the area of Applied Sciences for broad-based application across all age groups served by MNS programs (Pre-K through 12). Educator is expected to create at least one new program each year and provide training for that program to other members of the educational staff. Educator is also expected to evaluate the success and current relevance of MNS Education programs and, if necessary, modify existing curriculum throughout the year.
  • Present year round outreach, in-house, and afterschool supplemental science instruction consistent with the Museum’s mission and the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills. Presentation of program is expected to be approximately 70 percent of Educator’s responsibility.
    These duties are performed to satisfaction when students receive accurate information through researched-based instructional methods.
  • Assist in the general workload of the Education Department to accomplish all short and long-term goals.
    These duties are performed to satisfaction when the tasks of the Education Department are completed in an efficient and timely manner.
  • Attend professional development and/or other conferences in various fields of Applied Sciences and serve as the Museum spokesperson in these areas if necessary.
  • Participate in the planning and realization of various functions of the Museum of Nature & Science throughout the year that may occur during hours outside the scheduled work day. These events will number no more than 4 weekends per year, for which compensation time will be given.
  • Other duties as assigned to assist museum staff, e.g. exhibition content development.
    These duties are performed to satisfaction when the employee recognizes the importance of new, additional or periodic assignments as needed. Performs additional duties as directed and asks questions for clarification when needed. Takes on additional responsibilities and works in a positive manner with other members of MNS.

Essential Academic Requirements:

  • Educator must have a Bachelor of Arts or Science in Engineering, Computer Science or Physics.
  • Educator should have 3-5 years experience in classroom instruction and curriculum development.
  • Educator must have a high-level understanding of computers and various software programs (Excel, Word, and Outlook) and is expected to have some supplemental experience with interactive data collection software and hardware.

Essential Physical Requirements:

  • Educator must be able to capably lift 25 pounds of equipment, bend comfortably at the knees and waist, twist, stand for extended periods of time (up to 3 hours) and have a satisfactory Motor Vehicle Department record.

Position Title: Exhibits Project Management Coordinator
Department: Exhibits
Job Classification: Full time Temporary (2008 – 2012)

Summary of Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions: The Museum of Nature & Science is currently developing 60,000 sf of exhibits for a new science museum to open in 2012 in downtown Dallas, Texas. The Exhibits Project Management Coordinator will coordinate the exhibit development process with several exhibit design firms, the project architect (Morphosis), the museum exhibits and education teams, community committees providing content expertise for each exhibition, and several exhibit fabricator companies over a four-year period. These exhibits will range from a Children’s Museum to interactive science and collections-based exhibitions, and STEM-focused exhibitions. The new museum will also build a state-of-the-art Temporary Exhibit Hall to ensure Dallas is ready to accept the best of traveling exhibitions.

The Exhibits Project Management Coordinator will ensure that the exhibit development process adheres to the project schedule and concludes the process within budget. This person will manage internal committees, external vendors, and community organizations.

Essential Job Skills Required:

  • 8 -10 years experience project management in an exhibit design firm or museum.  
  • Strong knowledge of exhibit design and fabrication process, exhibition AV/technology, and educational theory.
  • A proven ability to manage creative teams and many tasks and projects simultaneously.
  • A passion for hands-on museum-based learning for all ages.
  • Fluency with various software programs (Excel, Word, Outlook, and Project Manager). 
  • College degree preferred.

Position Title: Corporate Sponsorship Manager
Department: Development
Job Classification: Part-time, exempt

Summary of Position: The Corporate Sponsorships Manager reports to the Chief Development and Public Affairs Officer (CDPA) and is a key member of the department’s team. The Manager is responsible for identifying, expanding and being a steward for the Museum’s relationships with the business community through its sponsorships, special projects, annual and event fundraising for the Museum as well as the Expansion campaign.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Manage the Museum’s sponsorship program for permanent & traveling exhibitions, Museum-hosted fundraising events (Dinner in the Wild), IMAX films, festivals, lectures, etc. by identifying and securing contributions to underwrite costs of those activities
  • Manage relationships with sponsors to ensure their interaction with the Museum including ongoing stewardship to engage them in future sponsorships
  • Work with the Special Events and Membership Managers on Museum-hosted events to secure support and steward participating corporate donors
  • Conduct research on prospective and existing sponsors
  • Work with the CDPA Officer to create and manage relevant budgets
  • Support the CEO, the CDPA and Board of Directors in their fundraising efforts for operations and campaign
  • Work with the Development Services Coordinator to help ensure the accuracy of donor records, to maintain and expand database of potential donors, and all donor recognition and acknowledgements
  • Serve as liaison for the Museum in the corporate community including attending and participating in functions to increase the Museum’s visibility
  • Work with the Director of Marketing to help inform how the Museum positions itself to the DFW business sector
  • Work with the Museum’s Corporate Membership Manager in identifying corporate prospects and determining strategic approach to cultivate corporate community
  • Work together with Museum’s Corporate Membership Manager to make sure all Corporate budgetary goals are achieved

Educational / Experience: 

Position requires Bachelor's Degree and 5 – 7 years experience in fundraising. Corporate Membership Manager must be able to work some evenings.


Position Title: Guest Services Unit 6 PT
Department: Operations
Job Classification: Part-time, Hourly, Non-exempt

Summary of Position: The summary of this position is to provide guests the highest quality of experience by providing optimum service for guests, volunteers, staff and property. This person will assist guests with information regarding memberships, tickets and exhibits.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Building Mgmt:
    • Responsible for opening both buildings prior to opening for the business day and closing after all activities whether customary operations or special events.
    • Responsible for the keys to both buildings.
    • Responds to all emergencies (i.e. medical, theft, injury, vandalism). On the list of contacts that responds to after-hours emergency calls (fire/security from our monitoring alarm companies).
    • Assists in the counting and verifying cash in the main safe (Box Office).
    • Assists with building crowd control.
    • Identifies building problems (needed repairs, OSHA requirements, etc.). Makes needed repairs and reports problems to Building Operations Manager.
    • Assists with shipping and receiving.
  • Guest Services:
    • Acts as floor manager coordinating with Box Office Manager to oversee all floor functions for the day.
    • Assists in resolving guests' complaints, may refer problems to appropriate managers.
    • Assists with school groups check-in.
    • Organizes and assists with check-in of groups for programs, shows, classes and workshops.
    • Manages Lost and Found Department.
    • Assists IMAX house staff and Exhibit/Ticket Taking staff with ushering, seating for MAX shows, taking tickets and other duties as needed.
    • Runs errands.
    • Assists in set -up/take-down for special events.
    • Assists in cleaning work areas.
    • Assists other departments with tasks at non-peak times.
    • Special projects as assigned by Building Operations Manager.

Qualifications

  • Good customer relations.
  • Must be adaptable to changing job responsibilities.
  • Some computer skills necessary for record keeping.
  • Must be flexible (schedules and shifts vary daily.)
  • Responds with good judgment to emergency situations.

Essential Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to push/pull 50+ pounds on carts/dollies as needed.
  • Must be able to setup and take down tables and chairs for events.
  • Must be able to move quickly in case of emergency situations.

Position Title: Cashier
Manager: Box Office Manager
Job Classification: Part-time, Hourly

Summary of Position: Process all ticket transactions using cash handling procedures that have been set in placed by Finance and the Director of Operations.  Balance cash receipts to end of day report on a daily basis.  Focus on customer service assuring that the visitor is being welcomed and informed of the various activities offered by MNS.  Promote membership and Fair Park Passport sales.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Greet customers in a friendly and inviting manner, provide necessary information for the customer to make an informed decision on what type of ticket they wish to purchase to the IMAX, Museum Exhibits or Planetarium.
  • Appropriately schedule visitors to their various venue choices.
  • Handle transactions quickly and efficiently.
  • Communicate with IMAX house staff via radio on when to stop selling tickets to a film that is about to start.
  • Communicate with other staff via radio when necessary to keep sales and flow of visitors organized.
  • Be informed on and use the different types of coupons and vouchers that are presented.
  • Responsible for completing daily reports and turning cash over to Box Office Lead.
  • Batch out credit card machine.
  • Encourage visitors to become members. Provide membership information and sell memberships, accurately and completely filling out membership applications.
  • Provide information on new exhibits or new IMAX films as well as answer any other questions visitors may have about our programs or about Fair Park.
  • Give directions when needed.
  • Turn over lost items to Guest Services.
  • Work in other Guest Services areas when necessary.
  • Refund money lost in vending machines. Have customer fill out refund slip.
  • Contact Guest Services when a customer requests a wheelchair.
  • Contact Guest Services to notify of any solicitors or panhandlers in the lobby or parking area.
  • Special projects as assigned.
