Many students know exactly what career path they want to take as soon as they begin the application process for college admissions. However, some students have no idea what they want to do. Surely, you can enter a college as an undeclared major. But the sooner you select a program in which to major, the better it will be.
Why is a major important?
Choosing a major is important as you can take the courses and certifications you need to obtain the degree in your chosen field. The sooner you can decide on a major, the easier it will be to enroll in the required courses. When you have a chosen major at an early stage of your college education, you will have the time to complete any extra certifications or requirements, or even have a minor. All of these things can help you stand out when it comes time to find a job.

Choosing a major in college will allow you to make the choices that start the formation of your future career. For example, selecting a major will directly affect:

What if I am undecided?
At least 20% of newly registered college students enter the college without declaring a major. While it might cause some anxiety or fear, you shouldn’t worry. Colleges provide counselors and advisors that students are required to meet. The main purpose of these meetings is to get to know you better and help you discover what major you would benefit from.
Many undeclared students will take all of the general courses during their first year. These courses are the basic ones no matter what major you choose. Every single student will need to take them and pass before they graduate. These courses include:

- Math
- Social Sciences
- History
- Chemistry
- And others, depending on the college you are attending
While you may enter the college as undecided, you need to make a decision on a major before you begin your sophomore year. In fact, nearly every college requires that you do have a major before you begin your second year.
What if I change my mind?
If you find that you are not passionate about or you do not enjoy the major of your choice, speak to your advisor immediately. They can help you find the major that suits you best so you do not have to take courses that are not needed or re-take a course for the sake of the new major. Sometimes switching majors can cause a setback to your graduation, but at the end of the day, you want to graduate with the major that will launch you into a career you will love for the rest of your life.
